Bridging Communities: The "Local Exchange" Project Brings Hastings and Its Neighbors Together

Celebrating Culture, Connecting People, and Strengthening Partnerships Across Minnesota

Hastings, Minnesota, has always been about community, connection, and shared history. Now, with HastingsNow.com’s exciting new initiative—the “Local Exchange”—we're about to take those connections to a whole new level. Launching in 2025, this project will bring Hastings and twelve surrounding cities together in a year-long cultural exchange, creating lasting relationships, celebrating our stories, and embracing our shared future.

The Local Exchange: A Year of Cultural Connection

Starting in January 2025, Hastings will take to the road, visiting one neighboring community each month—from the charming river town of Red Wing to the artistic enclave of Northfield, and across the river to picturesque Prescott, Wisconsin. Think of it as a cultural road trip: part exchange, part exploration, and all about community.

Our mission? To learn from our neighbors and to share the best of Hastings with them in return. In return, we’ll invite each of these cities back to Hastings to experience our local magic—from downtown dining to the stunning river views that make Hastings, well, Hastings.

It’s a pen-pal program brought to life, building friendships through shared experiences, stories, and traditions. And the best part? You’re invited to be part of every step. HastingsNow.com will document every visit, sharing the sights, stories, and adventures on social media and our blog, so the entire community can come along for the ride.

Historical Perspectives on the Local Exchange

To inspire this effort, we looked to the wisdom of historical icons known for their unique perspectives on community, connection, and progress. Here’s how we imagine five historical legends might view this project:

  1. Ibn Khaldun: Celebrating Social Solidarity The 14th-century historian Ibn Khaldun might view the Local Exchange as a prime opportunity for building asabiyyah, or social cohesion. He’d remind us, “A thriving community is built on shared knowledge and mutual respect.” By engaging our neighbors, Hastings strengthens social bonds that are the foundation of progress and prosperity. His advice? Document the journey—preserving these shared stories for future generations.

  2. Frederick Douglass: Empowering Every Voice Frederick Douglass would recognize the power of dialogue and inclusivity within the Local Exchange. “True progress requires every voice to be heard,” he might say. His call to action? Engage everyone—young and old, newcomers and long-time residents, artists and entrepreneurs. We’re not just visiting; we’re listening, learning, and giving a platform to every story we encounter.

  3. Marie Curie: Innovating Together Marie Curie, known for her relentless curiosity, would see this project as a chance to spark collaborative innovation. “Shared knowledge propels progress,” she might note. Her advice? Use these exchanges as a think tank for community challenges—whether it’s sustainability, education, or public health. Let’s tackle our shared issues together, with fresh eyes and united hands.

  4. Wangari Maathai: Prioritizing the Planet Wangari Maathai, environmentalist and founder of the Green Belt Movement, would emphasize the importance of sustainability. “Let these exchanges promote not just cultural ties but also environmental stewardship,” she’d say. Her vision for the Local Exchange? Highlight eco-friendly initiatives in each city, share best practices, and encourage green tourism that respects and protects our shared environment.

  5. Zora Neale Hurston: Capturing Community Spirit The brilliant Zora Neale Hurston would urge us to celebrate every community’s unique stories. “The real story of a place is told through its people,” she might say. Her advice? Capture the traditions, folklore, art, and voices of each community we visit. HastingsNow.com will be gathering and sharing these narratives, weaving them into a colorful tapestry that enriches us all.
