Hastings and Neighbors! We're back with another round of LOCAL 10. Here's the latest scoop from what's happening in and around our town.

First off, we've got some friendly competition between the Hastings Police Department and the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office . This isn't your typical competition, though. It's all about giving back to the community, and both departments definitely brought their A-game. In the end, the Hastings PD pulled ahead with a whopping 7,169 food donations, while the Dakota County Sheriff's Office made a commendable contribution with 3,650 donations. That's over 10,000 food items going straight to students in the Hastings area. The competition was part of this year's United Way of Hastings Sound the Siren food drive, and we couldn't be more proud of the outcome. Thanks to everyone who made this drive a success!

Next up, Anytime Fitness Hastings has some exciting news. Our local gym has been awarded Club Purple, placing them among the top 500 in the entire Anytime Fitness Franchise system. This is no small feat and speaks volumes about the dedication of their team and members. They have extended their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to this achievement and promise to continue providing the personable experience that members have grown to love.

In news from Cannon Falls, Ferndale Market has announced that they've stocked up on Sogn Valley Farm plants. The locally-grown, organic tomato, pepper, and herb plants are now available for purchase. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, it's the perfect time to stop by Ferndale Market and get your green thumb on.

Over at Jan's School of Dance, there's a lot to celebrate. In the past few weeks, they've competed at @in10sitydance and @starz_dance, bringing home an impressive haul of awards. With 55 platinums, 58 overall placements, and 9 judges choice awards, their hard work and talent have truly paid off. Special shoutouts go to standout dancers Lindsey, Kiara, Reese, Haley, and Calia, who were invited to dance in a special routine at nationals. The entire team is looking forward to their next event at @dxeventsofficial.

As we move into Mental Health Awareness Month, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is highlighting the link between time spent outdoors and improved mental health. It's no secret that nature has a calming effect, and research supports the idea that exposure to the great outdoors leads to improved attention, lower stress, better mood, and even a reduced risk of psychiatric disorders. So, what's your favorite way to spend time in nature?

Over in our educational sector, Hastings Public Schools is making some big decisions. The school board has selected two finalists for the district's superintendent position. Dr. Tamara Champa from Pine Island Schools and Dr. John Bezek from Prior Lake Public Schools are the two esteemed educators in the running. After sifting through 11 applicants and holding multiple interviews, these two candidates stood out based on criteria set by the school board and input from a stakeholder survey. The final interviews will be held at the Hastings Middle School media center on May 23, 2023, starting at 4:30 PM, and the public is welcome to attend.

Meanwhile, 2nd Street Depot Bar & Grill is celebrating the end of the school year with a special event just for teachers. On Friday, June 9th, 2023, from 9 PM to 1 AM, the bar and grill will be offering happy hour all night long to all teachers who show their badge. And to keep the celebratory mood going, the band 'The Bored' will be playing live music. So, teachers, make sure to mark your calendars for a night of fun and appreciation for all your hard work!

Finally, we have some impressive news from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School. Two of their athletes, Gabriella S. and Jacqueline S., have made their mark at the 2023 NASP Eastern Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky (National Archery in the Schools Program). Out of 1,814 participants, Gabriella placed 464th and Jacqueline 469th, both with a score of 246. Their hard work and determination since the State tournament led them to this prestigious competition, and their top 26% ranking in the Nation for Elementary Girls is a testament to their skill and dedication. Way to go, Patriots!
