The history of the battery is a long and fascinating one, with many important developments and innovations occurring over the course of thousands of years. The first known use of a battery dates back to ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia and Egypt, where people used clay pots filled with copper sulfate and iron electrodes to create an electrochemical cell. These early batteries, known as "Baghdad batteries," were likely used for electrotherapy or electroplating, rather than for generating electricity.
In the centuries that followed, numerous other early batteries were developed and used for a variety of purposes. In the late 1700s, for example, the Italian scientist Alessandro Volta created the first true electric battery, known as the voltaic pile.
